• Packing services: Packing isn’t always complimentary. But even if it sets you back a couple hundred bucks, it’s money well spent. When you pay for full service packing, your movers will handle the whole process, right down to the last packing peanut.

• Access fees: Before you book a move, it’s a good idea to think about the path you take from your front door to your parking spot. If there are any gates, staircases, elevators, or annoying parking rules, your movers will most likely bill extra for the extra obstacles.
• Shuttle fees: Your movers will use a big truck, and most cities don’t like when big trucks block traffic. Instead, the main truck will have to be parked on the outskirts, and your movers will have to use a smaller vehicle to ferry everything back and forth.
• Insurance: Sometimes stuff gets broken. Thankfully, it doesn’t happen all the time, and movers are required to offer a minimum level of insurance. However, it’s only good for $0.60 per pound of items lost, damaged, or destroyed. Full-value coverage costs extra.
• Gratuity: This isn’t usually added on your quote, but you should plan for it in any case. Unless your movers explicitly decline to accept gratuities, you’ll want to budget this one out. 15% – 20% is a good figure, to be divvied up across your whole moving crew.

Any move over 100 miles or across state lines counts as a long distance move. Long distance movers need to be certified by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). If you’re shopping for movers, look for their DOT number and FMCSA motor carrier number – usually just written as MC – to make sure they’re legit.

You can’t do much about the distance of your move, but you can always downsize to lighten the load. Get rid of your old and unwanted items before you get a quote.

And if you’ve got a flexible schedule, try to book a move that’s in the middle of the week, the middle of the month, and far away from major holidays or vacation times. Summer is always busy, and summer is always expensive.
