How Much Does it Cost to Hire Long Distance Movers in Seattle?
It typically costs between $900 and $16,000 to book long distance movers in Seattle. We’ve seen the odd move that was a little cheaper or more expensive, but the $900 and $16,000 range covers the vast majority.
It’s a big window, and your final price really depends on how much you have to move, and how many miles you have to travel. Moving a studio apartment to Portland is going to be a lot cheaper than moving Frasier’s penthouse all the way to the Florida Keys.
Want something a little more exact? We’ve got you covered. Check out this table of moving prices, and see how much you should set aside for the big day:
Distance | 1 Bedroom | 2 – 3 Bedroom | 4 – 5 Bedroom |
100 miles | $900 – $2,500 | $1,500 – $4,000 | $3,000 – $6,000 |
250 miles | $1,200 – $3,500 | $2,000 – $5,500 | $4,000 – $7,500 |

Seattle Long Distance Moving FAQs
What Factors Impact the Cost of a Long-Distance Move?
Aside from the physical size of your move and the distance you have to travel, there are a few other important factors that determine how much you’re going to spend on your move. When you’re shopping for moving quotes, keep these in mind:
- Packing services: Packing services are typically offered as an extra, which means you’ll have to pay for packing on top of your base moving price. This can range from a few hundred bucks to a few thousand, depending on how much you’re moving.
- Access fees: If you’ve got a long driveway (over 75 feet), extra flights of stairs, elevators, or gates to deal with, you’ll have to shell out for access fees. It’s a good idea to communicate with your movers as much as possible to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
- Insurance: Movers are federally required to offer basic insurance coverage for free. But this basic coverage is only good for $0.60 per pound of damaged items. If you want to be fully reimbursed, you’ll have to pay for full value coverage.
- Shuttles: Some cities don’t allow big moving trucks to park right at the curb. Instead, movers have to park outside of town, and use a smaller truck to ferry your belongings back and forth. Thank city hall for the extra fee.
- Time of Year: Some seasons are more popular for moving. Pretty much any time the kids are out of school, you can expect some steeply increased prices. Same goes for the first and last days of the month (that’s when leases run out).
What is the cheapest option for moving long distances?
The cheapest way to move long distance is to DIY the whole thing. On paper, at least. Sure, it looks cheaper at first glance, but you’ll have to think about any expenses you’ll have to cover along the way.
First, you’ll have to rent the moving truck. You’ll also have to pay for gas, food, and lodging – assuming you’re traveling a long enough distance. Another overlooked expense? Missed paychecks.
You can’t work when you’re moving, and those work hours you traded for boxing, loading, and hauling will take a dent out of your income.
Sometimes, it’s just more efficient to hire the pros. You’re already spending some money on your move; why not make it into a vacation?
What is considered long distance for a moving company?
In the moving industry, anything over 100 miles or across state lines counts as a long distance move (even if the state line is just a mile away). On the other hand, if you’re moving less than 100 miles and staying in the same state, you’re looking at a local move.
Long distance movers charge by mile and by size (either in pounds or cubic feet). Local movers charge per hour and per mover (and it usually takes about 2 movers per bedroom).
How can I save money on a long distance move?
If you’re trying to move without breaking the bank, the first thing you should do is downsize. Get rid of all of your old, unwanted, or unused items. Thinking of upgrading your couch? Get rid of it, and buy a new one at your new place.
Got regret for a blender you’ve never opened? Sell it off, donate it, whatever – just don’t pay to move it if you don’t want it!
Aside from downsizing, we recommend booking a move far away from the summer, and far away from any major holidays. Shoot for a mid-week, mid-month move, and you won’t have to pay a premium.
What sets Out of State Moving Companies apart from other long-distance movers?
At Out of State Moving Companies, we put extra emphasis on stress-free moving. Sure, the other guys may pack you up and haul your stuff, but we go a step further.
From planning and prep to the final unpacking, our team is here to make sure you get an easy relocation. Oh, and we let you pick and choose the services you need, so you get a completely custom move.
How far in advance should I hire movers in Seattle?
It’s a good idea to book your movers about 2 to 3 months in advance. As optimistic as you may be, you may not have enough fuel in the metaphorical tank to do all your packing and paperwork when you clock out from work, so that leaves you with the weekends. And with 2 or 3 months of advance notice, that leaves you with 8 to 12 weekends to take care of everything. Do yourself a favor, and give yourself plenty of extra time to avoid any pressure.
How long does a long distance move take?
A long distance move will take anywhere from 1 to 21 days. Drivers aren’t allowed to log more than 400 miles of interstate travel per day, so take the distance between point A and point B and divide it by 400 for a quick minimum.
Don’t get too excited if you’re just moving to a studio apartment or a 1-bedroom. Sometimes, these smaller moves actually take longer. It’s a common practice to bundle several small moves together in the same truck (it cuts down on wasted space, and ensures your movers are getting the most out of their route).
Your movers will keep everything safe and separated, but there’ll be added delays for pickups and dropoffs along the way.
